In this world there are many perplexing questions. What is love? Why is the sky blue? How is a rainbow made? What is the meaning of life? All are very valid questions, but there is one question that has vexed even the most genius among us. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Well friends, this is the story that explains it all.

In a time long, long ago, a time before before chickens, all birds had one job: to fly. Some flew high, some flew far, and some just sort of hopped around. But they all flew.

Then there was Neddy, a rather round and uninspired pigeon. She had no interest in seeing the world or migrating south for the winter. She preferred to stay put, munching on discarded breadcrumbs. Her main passion, in fact, was napping.

One afternoon, a flock of pigeons announced they were going on a great journey. "You coming, Neddy?" they cooed.

Neddy  looked up, flapped her tiny wings half-heartedly, and then settled back down. "Nah, I think I'll sit this one out," she mumbled. "Besides, all that flying is exhausting."

The other birds scoffed and flew away. Neddy enjoyed the peace and quiet for a while, until a mischievous cat came stalking around. Neddy, was startled and terrified, she tried to fly away, but she was too slow.

Just as the cat was about to pounce, Neddy let out a panicked, squawking noise. She flapped her wings so hard that she spun around in a circle and landed in a hapless heap. She also happened to drop a beautifully-shaped, very large, very white egg.

The cat, distracted by the shiny, wobbling egg, forgot all about Neddy. The cat batted at the egg, and the egg rolled away into a nearby bush. The cat chased after it, and Neddy was safe.

Later, the other pigeons returned, exhausted from their journey. They saw Neddy, completely content, sitting on her new invention.

"What is  that thing?" they asked.

"This?" Neddy said proudly. "Why this folks, is what I call a chicken! It's a non-flying bird that makes its own breakfast. Its far more practical than all that flying around."

The other birds, still tired from their trip, decided Neddy had a point. One by one, they started trying to make their own "chickens," and soon the world was filled with them.

From that day on, flying birds and non-flying chickens lived side-by-side, each with their own purpose. And the cat? Well, the cat was never seen again, which is probably for the best.

Now you know the whole story. So as you dine on your delicious deep fried chicken, give thanks to Neddy the pudgy pigeon for bringing chicken to the world so we can enjoy it!
